having issues...

Normally, I would say this... However, I am having some pain issues right now and I'm not quite sure what's going on. I have been working out pretty hard for years but my journey into running is pretty new for me. I mean, yes I'd go out and run 1-2 miles as part of my workouts, BUT longer runs are something I hadn't done in my past...ever! I've run 5K's, but only from having the ability to run about 2 days a week. I have been running for 4-5 days a week for a couple of months now and I think I may have injured myself? I only run outdoors-no treadmill or indoor tracks...just the pavement-a good, free workout!

..and the bad news: I am having major left, hip pain. Bone, not muscle. A dull ache and throbbing? Please tell me this MIGHT be normal? Please? I have great running shoes, was fitted for them and they've worked great. Had some sore muscle issues in the past, but nothing like this. It hurts when I run, walk, stand too long, bend, and especially when I'm lying in bed. ?? Hope this is ringing a bell for some of you runners' out there?

With my education in Exercise Phys, you'd think I'd have ALL of the answers but I have found myself totally clueless with this pain. I have taken the past few days off from exercise completely, just stretching and some core work. That's it and I'm still having the pain :( I have told myself that I will lay off running a few more days and see how it feels, if I'm still in pain I'm afraid a doctor visit might be in my near future? YIKES.

How do you stay motivated when an injury sets you back?

So sorry to hear about this injury! I've been lucky so far and haven't had any hip injuries, but if it keeps up I would definitely see a doctor! Hope you're back to normal soon!

I'm sorry to hear about your injury. I hope you start to feel better soon.

I got shingles in April and have not been able to run since then. I want to be out there badly, but I cannot. To answer your question about what keeps me motivated: I continue to read about other runners and live vicariously through them. One day I'll be out there again, and I want to feel I am still part of that world.

Again, I hope you start to feel better soon. I know what it's like to go from running a few times a week to doing absolutely nothing. Sending positive, healing thoughts your way!

My left hip bothered me last year, but I don't have the answers for you. I backed off my mileage and did more stretching and foam rolling for that one.

With my left foot this summer, I finally slowed down my training pace times and that helped. Maybe you need to get checked out?

Oh no!! I hope it is nothing bad! I haven't ever had that kind of pain before so I don't know. It seems like injuries are going around. I am writing something about being injured too. Hope you feel better soon!

Ugh!!! I've had hip issues in the past mostly when I upped my mileage a lot. I made sure I stretched a lot and used the foam roller. I also used heat before I went out for a run. I hope it gets better soon!!

That sounds like time to call the doctor. Definitely get it checked out in case running more will make things worse.

That's what I am dealing with right now too. A dull ache, but hard to tell for sure if it's bone or just really deep muscle/nerve. Maybe a tight muscle wrapped around your sciatic nerve? Go see someone, if it's muscle tension and scar tissue that needs to be worked out (as mine is) you won't be able to wait it out. In the race today my entire leg seized up at mile 7. I got through the race with a lot of stretch breaks, but it was not pretty. One of my lessons learned is to go seek help as soon as somethig feels like more than normal sore muscles, My Dr said that the scar tissue is something that builds up over a long time, but will result in pain when you suddenly increase the focus or intensity of your workouts. Sound familiar? :)

I can no longer run because of injury. Now I'm a pilates fan because it stretches me out and makes me stronger than anything else.
Hope the pain is temporary!!!

I'm so sorry to hear you're having pain. I wish I had words of advice about staying motivated. It's one of the hardest parts of being a runner. The one thing I can highly recommend is don't return to your regular activities too soon. It will be tempting but the risk of injury recurrence is high.

Take care and get better soon!

I've had hip pain twice from increasing my running miles. The first time was super painful and I ended up getting a cortisone shot. It went away super quickly after that, and didn't come back for several years. The second time wasn't as bad, and I got a 5 day steroid pack. Again, it went away! I was so glad when I finally went to the doctor because you don't have to live with the pain!!
